Handle to DID Resolver

Resolve a Handle

With or without @, .bsky.social added automatically

Default: Official Bluesky PDS

What is a DID?

A DID (Decentralized Identifier) is a globally unique identifier in the AT Protocol that permanently identifies your account. Unlike handles which can change, your DID remains constant throughout your account's lifetime.

Example DID:

did:plc:z72i7hdynmk6r22z27h6tvur

Why Use DIDs?

  • •Permanence: Your DID never changes, even if you change your handle or move to a different PDS
  • •Portability: DIDs enable account portability across different Personal Data Servers (PDS)
  • •Identity: DIDs serve as the foundation for cryptographic identity verification in the AT Protocol
  • •Interoperability: Other services and applications can reliably reference your account using your DID

How Resolution Works

When you enter a handle, this tool queries the AT Protocol's com.atproto.identity.resolveHandle API endpoint on the specified PDS. The resolution process:

  1. Normalizes your handle (removes @, adds .bsky.social if needed)
  2. Sends a request to the PDS server
  3. The server performs DNS lookup or checks its .well-known directory
  4. Returns the corresponding DID document identifier

Note: Most Bluesky users are on the default PDS (bsky.social), but self-hosters may use custom PDS instances.

Technical Details: This tool uses the com.atproto.identity.resolveHandle XRPC endpoint from the AT Protocol specification. All resolution happens client-side in your browser.
